Carla Medina joined Mariachi Las Alteñas in 2004. A native of Seguin, she started learning about mariachi in her senior year of high school. After graduation, she immersed herself in the renowned mariachi program at the University of Texas-Pan American, now UTRGV. During her time at UT-Pan Am, she was an original member of their first femenil group, won the University Level Vocal Competition at the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza and the Master’s Division at Noche de Gala. After performing onstage at the Vargas Extravaganza she had the opportunity to audition for Las Alteñas, and the rest is history. She was tapped to become the Associate Mariachi Director at Irving Middle School and loved her time there and went on to serve as Mariachi Co-Director at the non-profit organization Teatro de Artes de Juan Seguin, where she first got her start in mariachi.
Mariachi Las Alteñas experienced a profound loss in November 2024 as our beloved sister, Carla Medina, made the journey to her eternal home. After a courageous and relentless battle with cancer, Carla is now at rest and free from suffering. She fought with unwavering strength until the very end.
Carla was not only our sister and friend but also our prayer leader before concerts, a gifted violinist, and an extraordinary vocalist. She earned the title "La Voz de Oro" and we feel incredibly blessed to have shared so many beautiful memories and joyful moments with her.
Those fortunate enough to know Carla will remember her boundless compassion and generosity. She put others before herself, always, and was a remarkable daughter, mother, friend, and musician. She was unforgettable for her kindness, talent, and courage. Carla was among the strongest women we have ever known.
Our lives and our music are forever enriched because of her, our sister in music. She will be deeply missed, and her memory will live on in our hearts.
